Frequently Asked Questions

"No one is dumb who is curious. The people who don't ask questions remain clueless throughout their lives."
~ Neil deGrasse Tyson

Our annual Housing Choice Voucher/Section 8 Lottery wait list opens every July for the online pre-application process. All other housing assistance programs open as HUD funding, inventory, program needs, and/or program managers dictate. You can register to receive email notifications when any of our programs will open for the online pre-application process by clicking here and entering your email address, or by clicking the link in the “Subscribe” section on our About/Contact Us page. We will have an announcement on our website, on our automated phone system, and in The Gazette when we have specific dates for any opening.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any estimated timelines for when a family will begin their intake process to receive housing assistance. Some wait lists are able to place families within a few weeks from when they applied, while others can remain on a wait list for years before receiving assistance. HUD funding, program availability, and our finite inventory are all factors in that equation.

CSHA is currently BILLING for all portability requests. You must first notify your current housing authority of your intention to transfer your voucher and where you would like to transfer to. They will determine your eligibility for portability on their end and then will reach out to us with the portability documentation. We cannot begin processing portability requests on our end until we receive the proper documentation directly from your current housing authority. Please click here for more information on the portability process and for contact information on where to send the portability request. Our Utility Allowance Charts, Fair Market Rent Standards, Income Limits, and additional information can be found on the bottom of our HCV Page.

Unfortunately, the CSHA is unable to provide legal advice or services. We refer our clients to Colorado Legal Services at (719) 471-0380 for all legal services.

In addition to the steps below, more information we find useful for landlords can be found on our Landlord Information page via our HCV Page.

  1. List your rental unit(s) on the Affordable Housing website (https://www.affordablehousing.com).
  2. A HCV participant chooses your unit.
  3. Complete a Request for Tenancy Approval (RTA) packet with the HCV participant, and return to CSHA with a proposed lease.
  4. CSHA approves the RTA and schedules an inspection.
  5. Sign Housing Assistance Program (HAP) contracts and lease, and return to CSHA.

Please click here for a list of FAQs specific to our HCV/Section 8 Lottery wait list. Please email info@csha.us if our FAQs do not answer your question(s) or if you have any additional questions.

Please review the CSHA Policy for CORA. After reviewing our policy, please fill out a CSHA CORA Request Form. A link for the CSHA CORA Request Form can also be found at the bottom of our website.

You can call (719) 387-6700 and press 1 to hear your ranking on any wait list(s) you are on at any time. If you recently applied, please allow at least one week after submitting your online pre-application to allow us to update our systems with your ranking information.

Unfortunately, the CSHA is not staffed to be able to assist everyone in filling out the online pre-application. If you have a medical reason for needing assistance, you can fill our a Request for Reasonable Accommodation for the specific program you are wanting to apply for by going to our Forms page and locating the appropriate Request for Reasonable Accommodation form. Silver Key, Catholic Charities, and/or your local Public Library may have additional resources to assist where we cannot.
